As I said in my initial report in December
Receiving this award has made a substantial difference to the progress of my art practice over the past 9 months and now over the past year.
It has enabled me to give specific and valued time every week to my art work, and I have consequently developed two substantial pieces of work.
As I indicated in my initial application I wanted to work with wood and recycling tin.
As I stated I was keen to work with the theme of childhood.
I have worked on and developed a lifesize wood carving of a father with a little girl on his shoulders. The piece of work is carved out of a whole tree and stands approx 8 feet high.
I am making a kind of ‘merry go round’ or ‘Carousel’ type of construction based on the very famous and domineering image of the former Bank of Scotland building on the Mound in Edinburgh.
One of the major parts of this piece is using recycled olive oil tins to cut up and soldered back together and up till now I have made a bus and a Volkswagen beetle using this method, I am about to embark on a model of the first ship my father went captain on, a trampship from the 1950’s called the Hermiston.
Both pieces of work are more resolved than they were in December I have completely rebuilt the ‘carousel’ as the initial shape of the dome was not as I wanted it to be.
I am much happier now with its shape and envision making many more vehicles and people to inhabit the ‘carousel’.
The wood carving has moved on considerably and I am at a stage where I am trying to
establish the characters of both the small girl and her father.
At the end of May I had to move out of the workshop space that I have been using for the past three years. This obviously has interrupted work but has brought great advantages. I have the occupancy on a month to month basis of a shop premises in Kyle. The extra space has given me a far better overview of both pieces of work and given me a space that is suitable for exhibiting work too.
I intend to have an ‘open day’ in the premises in Kyle on Thursday 7th July.
This will enable people to see the ongoing work that I have developed through the support of the ‘Talent Development’ programme. I know that many of the locals here where I live in Kyle are very curious as to what is happening in the shop on Station Road.
